As we descended into the thriving metropolis of the Yukon territory that is called Whitehorse we were greeted with blue skies, snow-capped hills, icy roads and frozen rivers and lakes… after inhaling hot chocolates with whipped cream (as only they do so well up here) and a variety of heated muffins and scones at the local cafe it was off on a drive to the property to meet the new loves of our loves… those gorgeous sled dogs…. the big thing to notice is… that its basically freezing up here so after enjoying getting our new winter artic style coats, pants, boots, mitts and facemasks…. we headed out for ‘Dog Sledding 101’… involving mainly how ‘the hell we will control the sleds’ and what to communicate to our dogs…
No doubt over the next few days we get that system down pat but today was all about harnesses, lead dogs, how to turn a sled and making sure our feet didn’t freeze… the reward at the end was a to hang out with about 66 dogs who all wanted a pat (never felt so popular in all our lives), enjoy a nice glass of wine, scrumptious Atlantic salmon and tiramisu for dinner and the hot tub on the deck… tomorrow is all about trying not to crash or fall off the sled, not mixing up our commands in order to make it to lunch and have a trail side bbq… and of course… we are seriously on the lookout for the northern lights… as well as trying to stay warm and work out ways to smuggle 66 dogs back to Australia… Yukon is really as beautiful, snow capped, rugged, scenic and cold as they say… an incredible place!
